Allow heavies with an HMG to press a button and enter a "sustained fire mode". The mode would take a few seconds to activate, allowing for relatively fast transitions to and from the mode, but still make entering the mode mid-fight impractical.
While in this mode, the HMG's accuracy rises, and it vents heat much more efficiently, allowing for more accurate, sustained fire. But, during this time the heavy becomes unable to move, and its arc of fire is limited to 45 degrees in front of it. The HMG heavy would become vulnerable to flanking and to snipers, but would be able to cover an area from infantry reasonably well.
Might be an interesting thing from a tactical and a gameplay standpoint. |

Only if it takes equally long to take down as set up would I support it.
Yeah, except I didn't want to describe it as using a bipod as I don't think that'd make much sense for Dust. But basically going for something like a recreation of the being able to setup as a machine gunner in whichever FPS game you'd like, as it's hardly an original idea.

It'd be situational. You'd use it to cover an avenue of approach or an objective, but you wouldn't just do it any old place as, yeah, someone would just come up and shoot you in the head.
And that's really the goal with it. Give HMGs a situational ability that lets them become more distinct from shotguns and assault rifles. |

It's something you'd use when it's appropriate. If you're moving in on an objective with a squad, maybe you pick a relatively concealed location, setup, and cover a probable avenue of approach the enemy might take to push your team mates back. Ironically, it would actually help alleviate some concerns about heavy speed, as the better accuracy and ability to sustain fire would let you engage targets effectively from further away.
If it wasn't clear in the original post, it'd be an optional mode you'd be able to deploy. You would not be forced to become immobile to shoot, you'd simply be able to do so when you felt it was tactically more appropriate. |
